Privacy Policy

Who I am

I'm Alex Hooley, a freelance web developer in the UK. I run alexhooley.com and I'm responsible for the personal data it collects. This policy explains what that data is, what I do with it, and the rights you have over it.

The site doesn't sell anything, and it has no accounts, logins or online payments.

What this site collects

  • Contact form: your name, email address, the subject you pick and your message.
  • Live chat: your messages and anything you choose to share in the chat, such as your name or email address, together with technical details about your visit, such as your browser, device, IP address and the pages you view.
  • Server logs: like any website, the servers that host the site record requests to it, including your IP address, browser and the pages you asked for.
  • Analytics: visit counts, the pages viewed, referring sites, and broad browser, device and country information. The analytics tool is designed not to collect personal data and doesn't use cookies.

Why I use it

  • Replying to you: I use what you send through the contact form or chat to answer your enquiry, and to discuss any work that might follow. The lawful basis is my legitimate interest in responding to people who get in touch, or taking steps at your request before entering into a contract.
  • Keeping the site running and secure: server logs are used to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. The lawful basis is legitimate interests.
  • Improving the site: anonymous analytics show me which pages are useful. The lawful basis is legitimate interests.

I don't sell your data, use it for advertising, or add you to a mailing list.

Who else handles it

These services process data on my behalf:

  • Netlify hosts the site, keeps its server logs and receives contact form submissions. Netlify is based in the United States.
  • Crisp provides the live chat and stores chat conversations. Crisp is based in France.
  • Fathom Analytics provides the site's analytics.

Where data is transferred outside the UK, it's covered by the safeguards in each provider's data processing terms. I may also share personal data if the law requires it.

Cookies

The site's own pages don't set cookies, and the analytics don't use them.

Crisp loads on every page and sets cookies when the chat loads. They let the chat remember your conversation as you move between pages and come back later. You can block or delete them in your browser settings; the rest of the site works without them.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the personal data I hold about you
  • have inaccurate data corrected
  • have your data deleted
  • object to, or ask me to restrict, how I use it
  • receive your data in a portable format

To use any of these rights, or to ask anything about this policy, get in touch through the contact page.

If you're unhappy with how I've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Changes to this policy

I'll update this page if what the site collects, or how I use it, changes. The date it was last updated is shown on this page.
